• A Vehicle Inspectorate check of 47 trucks on the Al at Scotch Corner last week resulted in five lorries receiving immediate prohibitions.
Out of 37 weighed by traffic examiners, three were found to be overloaded and immediately prohibited. A further three operators were found to be violating 0-licence conditions.
Of the 12 trucks seen by examiners, four were immediately prohibited for having defective tyres and brakes, a further four were served with defect notices, and one was given a delayed prohibition.
Despite this, senior traffic examiner Michael French was satisfied with the safety levels. "Although there were five prohibitive notices, the standard was very good and we were pleasantly surprised," he says.
Benefits Agency investigators also attended but failed to find any drivers illegally claiming unemployment benefit.
