• A Welsh farmer received 200 hours community service and was ordered to pay £256 costs after dumping a tank full of septic sludge on to a public bridieway, Effed Edwards from Cyffyiliog, near Ruthin, pleaded guilty to depositing controlled waste without a waste management licence when he appeared before Mold Magistrates.
The court heard how Edwards drove his tanker to land at Hope Mountain in Flintshire on 20 August last year, and deposited the contents onto the path.
However, a member of the public witnessed the incident and blocked the tanker from moving while he contacted the Environment Agency.
When officers arrived, they noted a very strong odour and a cloud of flies around the waste.
Edwards admitted the offence and told officers he had done it before, although he usually took waste to Kinmel Bay Sewage Treatment Works for disposal.
An agency spokesman says: "The defendant discovered to his cost that the Agency will not permit people to deposit controlled waste, unless it is on properly-licensed land."
