Continuing political unrest and civil disorder in Kenya is disrupting the
--raditionally buoyant UK export market, reports Steve Banner.
Used trucks are exported to Kenya from the UK in considerable numbers every year, but the current widespread civil disorder in the African country is disturbing the market.
"We've got one regular customer there who has been advised by the authorities not to go to his office or his bank because it isn't safe for him to do so," says Chris Hart, managing director Of independent dealer Trucks 2 Go. Clearly that makes it difficult for him to run his business.
But the underlying demand for trucks in Kenya remains strong, says Hart, especially for Scania and Mercedes-Benz sleeper-cab tractor units --4x2s are preferred to 6x2s at present"dated from 2001 onwards. "Slightly older vehicles can be sold there, but they attract more duty"
Not meeting reserve
While the situation in Kenya may be uncertain, there is plenty of demand for used trucks from other countries. "Russia, Lithuania and Poland are all really buoyant," Hart says.
"That said, export prices are starting to fall away a little," he adds. Some vehicles earmarked for export are appearing at two or even three auctions and apparently not meeting their reserve..
