EACH year H. P. Bulmer and Co. Ltd., EACH Hereford, the world's largest cider makers, distribute approximately 120,000 tons of their products in the United Kingdom. Now, working in conjunction with a firm of consultants, Mr. T. J. Goldrick, Bulmers transport manager, is reorganizing their distribution and delivery system.
Bulmers trunk by rail, by road tanker and by flat vehicles direct to their 17 depots, then distribute to customers. The fleet comprises 18 tankers, 30 heavy vehicles, most of which are articulated, and 70 rigid vehicles.
The two largest depots in London and Manchester are supplied on a 24-hour service, five days a week. Four trailers are delivered each day in London and two in Manchester, using two and one tractive units, respectively. Five new Foden/York articulated units are now being used for this work.
Bulmers are standardizing their range upon Foclens for long-distance work and Bedford TK vehicles for local delivery. The replacement programme envisages a life of ten years for the heavy units and five years for other types.
