1HE need for short-term solutions of Oxford's
traffic congestion was emphasized by Mr. W. M. Drawers, chairman of City of Oxford Motor Services Ltd., when he spoke at the annual presentation of long-service awards after a dinner at the Freemasons Hall, Oxford.
Mr. Drawers said that whatever the decision on the Central Redevelopment Plan inquiry was, it would be years before anything much could be done by way of road construction to relieve Oxford's appalling traffic problems.
Meanwhile congestion steadily became worse. Irrespective of the plan it was imperative, in his view, that a short-term solution should be found and implemented without delay.
"The present situation satisfies no one. Everybody in Oxford, motorist and bus passenger alike, is taking too long to go about his business."
A check on October 15 last year showed that during the morning peak period 22 per cent of all the city buses were more than three minutes late; in the evening peak the figure rose to 48 per cent.
