• A fear that one of the primary reasons for the establishment of the Freightliners was to abstract traffic from private road hauliers was both expressed and dispelled at an Institute of Traffic Administration meeting in Bristol.
This was one of the major topics of discussion arising from a talk given by Mr G. Body, manager, south-western region Freightliners Ltd on Freightliners' place in modern transport.
Mr Body answered the critics by stressing that his company only entered the field of road haulage out of necessity, to provide those customers who required it, a through-transport service.
During his talk Mr Body outlined the history of the growth of the company to its present state where it was handling half a million containers annually. This involved an inventory of 6350 containers, 850 road vehicles and 2400 staff.
Traffic and revenue between 1969 and 1970 rose by 21 per cent and 37 per cent resi2crively, Mr Body told members and "avhough full profitability — and with it full respectability — may have to wait until 1972".
