by Kathy Watson • Police are appealing to truck drivers for information after Irish terrorists tried to smuggle two tonnes of explosives on a truck through the port of Heysham, Lanes last Tuesday (12 July). The unaccompanied Leyland Freighter flatbed made the overnight crossing from Warrenpoint in County Down. Its registration is 5459 VIT, When the ferry docked early on Tuesday, the truck was put in a holding area for a standard check. Just before 06:00hrs, a man called to collect the vehicle and was told to return once it had been processed. Soon afterwards sniffer dogs helped uncover the home-made explosives compressed under steel sheeting along the entire length of the flatbed. Further explosive was packed into the hollow supporting structure underneath the loadbed.
The port was immediately closed but the suspect had disappeared.
