AS SOMEONE WHO has studied articles on LGVs from the time when CM used to carry a few pages on buses (my main interest), I feel the government is wasting money transferring freight to rail without getting rid of the rails first.
Just imagine a 600hp-plus Volvo or whatever pulling 100-plus trailers on disused or under-used railbeds — the record in Australia is 112 trailers on the highway.
I envisage guided ways using `0-bahn' or similar roller techniques. Note that the Denby short-body with a steering 'bogey' could eliminate any guide rollers, at least for short combinations.
My reason for writing to you is your reference to a "34m Bdouble combination proposed by Stan Robinson" (CM 31 May).As far as I know, it is the Denby Double which is classed as a B-double (tractor unit plus semi-trailer plus second semitrailer),whereas the Robinson idea is an A-Double (tractor unit plus semi-trailer plus dolly plus semi-trailer). Both semi-trailers are 13.6m, unlike now as a rigid plus trailer (dolly or not).
Australian codes are clear, if complex.
