Hand drill
Totally enclosed gears are 'a feature of a pistol-grip design of hand drill for wood, masonry and metal, made by the Maxey Manufacturing Company. The driving handle of the Moxey sweeps a radius of 3in., an unusual length of thrust for a small drill, and having totally enclosed gears the drill cannot pinch the user's hands. The leverage provided tightly locks the chuck jaws to prevent the drill slipping in difficult work or when pulling the drill clear. The pistol shape permits forward pressure to be applied with the full face of the hand and this natural hold helps the user to keep the drill straight.
The handle is removable in a few seconds by unscrewing the knurled holding knob, and may be replaced in the opposite side for safe keeping. This allows the tool to store compactly, lying flat in a drawer as shallow as 2in.
Measuring 81in. from the tip of the chuck to the extremity of the handle, the drill can be operated in a confined lateral space of 1 lin. Its weight is 18oz.
To fit within the slim body case the main bevel wheel is only lin. across, compared with 3in., or 31in. on a typical hand drill with an exposed wheel. However, with a reduction in the diameter of the second gear the ratio of handle turns to drill turn is about the same at 1: 3+. With the Moxey, normal drill speed is 300 rpm. Gear teeth slope from 3/16in. deep with slanted sides for strength and free running.
The gear mesh is closely maintained; both gear spindles have double-sided support to provide a stable fixture, and a hard brass thrust bush at the chuck end takes the heavy wear. The gears are of oil-impregnated sintered iron.
The thrust is taken on a hardened fourteen-ball thrust-race. The nickel-plated chuck has three hardened steel jaws and takes drills up to 5 /16in.
The housing of the tool consists of 1/1 61n. thick aluminium cast . in two pieces and hammer finished in silver/matt black. The protected working parts are not likely to require lubrication for some years, but the case may be opened for light greasing by undoing four screws, exposing all parts.

Vacu-Blast Ltd. has announced an inexpensive blast cabinet called the Vacu-Beadster, which incorporates an external gun so that work can also be carried out without dust up to 20ft away from the power unit. The Vacu-Beadster provides two blast systems in one package.
The system is designed for use with Vacu-Beads of 10/800 microns. Used purely as a dry honer cabinet, all manner of small workpieces such as dies, moulds, stainless-steel components and electronic parts can be blast-cleaned at high speed. To treat part of a large corn ponent that cannot be placed in the cabinet, the closed-circuit gun can be brought into action and the work carried out in an open workshop without creating dust or interfering with other work.

Torch specs
A unique device to assist those carrying out fine work in bad light has been introduced by Belanger Bros. Comprising a spectacle frame which fits on the head in the normal manner, the device has two small lamp units moulded into each outer edge. The lamps are powered by a pair of 1.5V batteries carried in a 2in. x 2in. container with a switch and a pocket clip. The torch specs, as they are known, are moulded in high-density plastics.
A second article made by the company is a metric conversion calculator. This is extremely simple to use, requiring no slide-rule or mathematical knowledge beyond simple addition. The calculator is a precision instrument the dimension section of which will convert into millimetres any value from .0001in. to 99,999in., or .01mm to 99,999mm. Accuracies up to six places of decimals are attainable depending on the value of the dimension.
A completely separate section of the calculator performs rapid conversions between millimetres and inches and fractions of an inch to a lesser degree of accuracy normally acceptable for rule dimensions. These scales cover from bin. to 100in. The instruments are precision made from high-grade, non-warping opalwhite and transparent materials. They are robust enough for continued office or shop floor use; full instructions are engraved on the face of the instrument.

Industrial drills
A complete range of industrial drills has been developed with variable trigger speed and abundant power by SKIL. Doubleinsulated, they have radio suppression. Every speed between zero and the tool's maximum rpm is obtained and controlled by the operator's finger pressure on the trigger. This has been achieved by using a silicon controlled rectifier in the switch circuit. The "electronic brain" works by first changing a.c. to d.c. current and then regulating the duration of the current flow to the motor.
An adjusting screw on the trigger allows the operator to select and maintain the right speed for a particular job by using the trigger locking button.
Wood, metal, plastics, composition, stone, glass, for example, can be drilled by simply changing the rpm to the job requirements. Centre punching, for starting a hole, is no longer needed; just start at an extremely low speed and then press the trigger further, in order to increase the speed. The bit will not skid when drilling in hard materials, curved surfaces or close to an edge.
The system is ideal for delicate jobs, such as drilling between wires and leads, in chrome or satin finish surfaces, in glass, tiles, etc. Driving screws, tapping threads, can all be undertaken with speed-controlled drills.
SKIL offers four industrial V.T.S. models with gin. and 1-in. chuck capacity. All models are supplied with a side handle. Ball bearing construction and double protection against motor burn-out add to the drills' dependability.

Load control
Rubbacord, a simple but effective system of load control introduced by Dixon-Bate, can quickly be adjusted to secure loads of different shapes and sizes. The system comprises lengths of high-tensile extruded solid rubber which will extend up to three times their original length with full recovery.
Specially formed plated hooks, supplied with Rubbacord, are quickly attached in any desired position by a simple securing loop. This versatility is considered to be the greatest single advantage of the system as the same units can be used to secure anything from cargo packaging materials to packaged goods.
The natural solid rubber material also resists corrosion and will not fray. Hooks can be threaded along the cord to give intermediate attachment points in addition to those at either end. Rubbacord is one of the Shorfast range of cargo control systems.

Route information
The Automobile Association has introduced a new route information service for members travelling on the Continent.
The old system of clipped together individual route sheets, many of them covering no more than 30 or 40km, is discontinued. More than 7,000 of these separate sheets were issued, as many as 70 being required for a typical 3,000-mile route.
Eight of the new streamlined Route Information Packs cover Western Europe. Each gives a wide range of essential information, a greater choice of roads to follow, and they are easier to read when travelling at speed. Says the AA: "The immediate gain to members will be a speedier service. Even in the peak holiday season we will now be able to supply Continental route information at short notice and the packs will be just as useful when planning a journey. The alternatives can be seen at a glance and for those anxious to reach their destination quickly the main through-routes are clearly indicated."
Three separate publications make up each part of the AA Route Information kit: a key map showing principal cities and towns linked by numbered lines with numbers referring to itineraries in the companion route book which is bound in durable covers. Up to 500 complete routes are contained in each pack, as well as a gazetteer and local information. A booklet of town plans is included to help drivers find their way through or around main centres.
Spa in and Portugal are covered by the first new route pack issued. The second pack will take in Western France and the Costa Brava. Eastern France and the Riviera: Switzerland, Austria and Italy; the Benelux countries and West Germany will follow. All will be available before the summer. The remaining three in the series, covering other parts of Europe, will be ready later in the year.

Solid state units eliminate "warm-up" period and provide instant operation at all times.

Protective sprays
Two new products introduced in aerosol cans by CP Development are called Quikeze, a rust solvent and penetrating oil, and Electra, a compound lubricant and anti-damp rust inhibitor.
Electra penetrates and kills dampness in electrical and mechanical systems, leaving a fine protective coating on all surfaces which protects against corrosion as long as it is not disturbed; it has exceptional resistance to salt spray. Both Quikeze and Electra are marketed in 8oz aerosols and in bulk.

Valve lock
Based on the principle used in the design of its anti-theft devices (CM January 10), Ellis {Colchester) Ltd. has now introduced a gadget to prevent tanker loads being discharged into incorrect storage tanks. The preventive method of marking a delivery point with a tag as a guard against it getting the wrong cargo has the fault that it relies upon the notice being read. Fitting padlocks is equally unsuitable because once the lock is removed the valve can be opened and closed at will and almost invariably the padlocks are left off.
The Ellis valve lock is made to fit all types of wheel-operated gate valves and comprises four main parts. These are a sp,indle shroud, a driving dog, a lock nut and a driving-dog key. The spindle shroud completely covers the wheel spindle and gland assembly and is retained in posi
tion by the driving dog and lock nut. While the shroud is free to revolve around the gland and spindle assembly, the dog is located on the gate spindle by virtue of its being bored square to mate with the square on the spindle. The outside of this dog is formed in a pre-determined shape which can he matched only by a key supplied on a registered basis and designed to accept the standard valve wheel.
The retaining nut is also of a special pattern and cannot be removed without its mating key.
Protection from incorrect discharge is ensured by a responsible person holding the key (or where possible the dispatching company can hold the key) and issuing it to the driver together with his delivery note only when a delivery is to be made to that particular site.
Not only is the device useful for this purpose but it will of course serve as a means of isolating a valve, for instance while work is in progress on a piece of plant; it will also prevent unauthorized persons from taking material from a storage tank. By employing Cellobond polyester resins, made by BP Plastics Ltd., in conjunction with glass fibre, Rydgeway Plastics has produced a surface to withstand all steam and water cleansing processes and with good abrasion-resistant qualities. A nonslip texture can be incorporated and the properties of the Cellobond resin ensure that the surface resists corrosion by most loads likely to be carried, including acids.
Rydgeway Plastics has found that a layer of glass-reinforced plastics laminated to 18mm plywood can greatly improve the wear capabilities of the interiors of commercial vehicles. The surface can be applied to any make of commercial vehicle either at a company's works or at a customer's premises. A service tool with a difference comes from AC Delco. A selfcontained device designed to ascertain the condition of engine temperature control thermostats, it comprises a small round tank containing a heating element.
The top side of the tank is pierced with three holes two of which are of a size suitable for the alternative sized thermostat units while the third accepts the stalk of a thermometer supplied in the kit. The 2kW element is of 230-250V and the thermometer is calibrated from 54deg F to 100deg F.
