COACHES belonging to National Travel's European partners — L'Epervier of Brussels and DFG of Frankfurt — may soon be operating to London on National's joint services from Munich and Frankfurt. At present foreign-owned vehicles are not allowed across the Channel on these regular express services.
Before the Continental coaches begin operating the Belgian and German authorities must agree to a DoE condition that passengers make the complete journey with the same vehicle. The DoE has indicated that, with this approval, it is prepared to recommend approval of the German and Belgian applications to operate the service.
Approval by the DoE means that left-hand-drive coaches will be exempt from the conditions of the RoadTraffic Act. They will operate instead under EEC regulations.
Nottingham-based groceries and provision wholesaler Arthur Richardsson and Son Ltd is using a Ratcliff tail-lift as part of the rear-door system on one of its vehicles. In the travelling position the platform keeps a spring-loaded upper flap tightly closed because of the platform's tapered ramp edge. When the platform is lowered the flap is freed and can then be pushed up, being held open by two spring-action telescopic struts.
