Various New Powers.

The Widsail Corporation has obtained a clause empowering it to make the use of taximeters on licensed hackney carriages compulsory in the Borough.

The Manchester Corporation Bill, under which powers are sought inter cilia to run motorbuses, will probably have got through all its stages in the House of Commons by the time this paragraph is in print.

Birkenhead Town Council has had a severe struggle before a Committee of the House of Lords, over which Lord Barnard presided, in osder to secure powers to run motorbuses in the district. The opposition of railway companies was the most persistent. Mr. A. R. Fearnley, the tramways manager of the Sheffield Corporation, in supporting the motorbus clauses, stated that the results at Sheffield were in every way better than estimates.

Fire Brigade Matters.

The Sowerby Bridge U.D.C. has appointed a sub-committee to go into the question of purchasing a motor tender.

The Edinburgh Town Council has decided to advertise for tenders for motor fire-engines fitted without option with reciprocating pumps. Todmorden U.D.C. matte its application, before Mr. F. H. Tulloeh, au L.G.B. inspector, yesterday (Wednesday), for a loan of £1650.

A sub-committee of the Winchester City Council, which has been iuvestig,ating the subject of motor fire-engines, has not yet reported. Dewsbury Town Council has decided to purchase a motor tender from Dennis Bros., Ltd., at :2590, for use in conjunction with and relief of its present motor fire-engine.

The Ramsgate Town Council has now approved the reconunendation of its Watch Committee, that the Town Clerk should be instructed to obtain copies of their catalogues, from the various makers of motor fire-engines, and information as to their experiences from local authorities who have purchased and used such engines.

New Registration. Stuart A. Curzon (Russia), Ltd. (S000), with its registered office at 96 to 100, Victoria Street, Westminster, S. \V. Business, proprietors of motorbuses, mace-cabs; motorvans, etc.

Yarmouth Council Helps.

The United Automobile Services, Ltd., expects to establish an hourly service of motorbuses between Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Southweld, at an early date. There was some opposition to the granting of licences at the last meeting of the Yarmouth Town Council, but this was outvoted by a large majority.

e6 The receipts of the National Steam Car Co., Ltd.. for the week ended 14th May, 1914, were Lt520. This shows an increase of 1:1119 over the corresponding period of last year.

The receipts of the Tramways (M.E.T.) Omnibus Co., Ltd., for the week ended 9th May, 1914, were I:9059, and for the Gensless Omnibus Co., Ltd., .E.168. These show an increase of 6o62 and 2213 respectively over the corresponding period of last year.

Commercars in Ireland.

The latest example of Commerear activity in Ireland concerns the establishment of a new motorbus service between Midleton and Ballycotton, Co. Cork.

The Thames Ditton 1..T.D.C. has been asked to grant licences to the Walton Motor Car Co., Ltd., for a. motorbus service between Horsham and Esher.

The South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., has been granted six licences for motorbuses, to ply from Rhymney Bridge to connect with the service between Pontlottyn and Ystrad Mynach Taxicabs for the Driven-owner.

The Chesham Supply Co., Ltd., has declared a dividend of 8 per cent. on its participating preference shares, and one of 30 per cent. on its ordinary shares, for the past financial year. It evidently finds the hire-supply of taxicabs pay.

Austin Ambulance for Manchester.

The Austin Motor Co., Ltd, notifies us that it has sold, through its Manchester depot, one of its latest 10 h.p chassis, upon which will be built the ambulance body formerly upon a 15 h.p. Austin chassis, which is in the possession of the Manchester Corporation Health Department. This ambulance is to be used for the conveyance of patients from the Manchester district to the Abergelly Sanatorium, and for general work by the Health Department.

Proposals and Purchases.

The Metropolitan Asylums Board has bought three chassis from Mr. Stuart A. Curzon at g425 each, three from the Siddeley Deasy Motor Car Co., Ltd., at £410 each, mid three from Sir W. G. A I'M

strong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd., 2100 each, for ambulance pur108es.

The Watch Committee of the Middlesbrough Town Council has devided to spend £600 On a motor amb Lllance.

Lieut.-Colonel Twiss, the hon. secretary of the Southampton eentre of the St. john Ambulance .\ssociation, acting in conjunction with the Fire Brigade Committee of the Southampton Town Council, is arranging to substitute a motor ambulance for the present horsedrawn vehicle in service.

Chesterfield Corporation proposes to purchase six additional motorbuses, The North Riding division of the Yorks. County Council has resolved to spend £129171 on the purchase of a steam tractor and petrol lorry.

Oswestry and Shrewsbury.

The G.W.R. is being urged by the Oswestry Town Council to establish a service of Inotorbuses between Oswestry and Shrewsbury. We should say that there is a good opening for private enterprise in both these towns, and we think that either or both of them should come-under the early notice of provincial motorbus groups.

Single-deck Omnibuses.

The extension of use of singledeckers is likely to grow for particular services in and around London. The financial success of this smaller type of vehicle is now admitted by parties who expressed doubts some few years ago. The extensions u-ill coneern both semirural areas and urban areas which include bridges of an obstructive type. They should be watched closely.

Daimler Hiring.

The hire department of the :Daimler Co., Ltd., at Store Street, Tottenham Court Road, W.C., which is under the management of Mr. Kinil P. Oppermann, as well as offering well-equipped private ears, is also in a position to quote for saloon moterbuses and various types of utility vehicles.
