RHA STAFF are slimmer but fatter, if you see what I mean, I commented about this time last year that their annual salaries averaged a miserable E5,698, or less than £110 a week. The annual report shows that in 1982 average pay rose to £6,666, or about £128 a week, for which sewage workers would offer no thanks.
But the average increase of E968 a year — a misleading comparison, I suspect — is not costing the members anything. Approximately the same amount of money as in 1981 was shared out last year between 85 employees instead of 100.
Mind you, the staff may still be doing relatively better than the members. Even the Freight Transport Association, which has a vested interest in hard bargains with hauliers, admits that in the 12 months to March 1 last rates rose by only 3-3.5 per cent whereas vehicle operating costs increased by about 8 per cent.
