• Vacu-Lug has speeded vehicle turnround with the use of demountable equipment; and at any one time at least three 24ft bodies are in use for every chassis.
The latest 18ft wheelbase Mercury 16-tongvw chassis to join the fleet is going into service with four extra bodies. The demountable equipment used is made by Freiihtaids Ltd, of Northampton. Rateliff 1-ton tail-lifts, powered from a battery pack, enable the boxes — with all-aluminium bodywork by E. H. Hutton Ltd, of Coston, Melton Mowbray — to be loaded while parked on their legs.
The vans are 24ft long and 9ft 6in. high, and carry maximum payloads of about 9 tons. The choice of body length was made with future drawbar-trailer demountable working in mind; two 24ft boxes can be carried within the permitted 18m overall length. A Santon isolating switch for the Smiths electro-hydraulic power-pack minimizes risk of tampering on an earthreturn electrical system.
