The current battle over the principle shift pay for Britain's 80.000 municipal ismen is to be referred to arbitration. us move follows deadlock in the neitiations between the Municipal Passenr Transport Employers' Federation and e Transport and General Workers' nion.
The union is claiming shift pay of 1.50 a week — equivalent to a 15 per .nt pay increase. The claim was originly lodged last December and rejected Aright. After the union opted for a aim of a flat 15 per cent pay increase ;gotiations finally resulted in basic rate creases of up to £1.50 a week, about 7 3. cent. Now the union side has made further claim for shift pay in order to !ach a settlement well in advance of the cpiry of the current agreement at the id of this year.
Any award made after arbitration — hich could take two months to complete will influence the size of the next iunicipal award as well as affecting the ay of London and provincial busmen to are also seeking shift payments.
