• A major overhaul of London's firefighting fleet is in the pipeline, with 10 companies vying for ,F,45m worth of business over the next 20 years.
London Fire Brigade wants bidders to come up with a programme for vehicle provision and maintenance and for the specialist equipment they carry. Its 242 Volvo pumps are currently maintained by the brigade through the capital programme— about £5m a year.
LFB spokesman Gordon White says: 'This is woefully inadequate when we also have to factor in our building programme. The new money will bring our vehicles up to date and keep them off the road as little as possible. We are asking companies to come up with a programme to see how best they can spend the money.'
Major contenders for the contract are believed to include Sarno, TLS, Ryder and Volvo. The list of bidders will be whittled down to six before the brigade decides.
