I'M TOLD that John Sexton, who lives in Bendish, Hertfordshire, stuck behind a Hands trailer during an Al traffic jam, came to wonder how the company got its name. Knowing, I am assured, that Hands is part of the Hawker Siddeley Group, he decided Hands must be an abbreviation for Hawker and Siddeley—H and S.
Original, but incorrect.
In fact, the company was founded by Howard Hands in 1926 as Hands and Co. and formed into a limited company as Hands (Letchworth) Ltd. in 1935. In 1961 the Gloster Aircraft Co. Ltd. acquired control and then in 1963, when the aircraft industry was rationalized, Hands became part of the Hawker Siddeley Group. In March this year the name of the company was changed to Hands Trailers Ltd.
Good luck in your next jam, Mr. Sexton!
