EVEN IF you haven't read Stories of Round Timber Haulage, you've probably seen the cover picturing an AEC Matador standing on its hind wheels.That was the definitive work by author Maurice Sanders, hut deteriorating health and advancing years have not prevented him writing.
His latest effort, A Triumph of Cardiology and Timber, is a modestly sized, but relatively lavishly produced booklet that tells two tales of great significance to him.
Firstly, there is an update on the mobile heart scanner operated by CORDA, the heart-disease charity. Sanders has been a tireless fundraiser for CORDA to the tune of /20,000 (helped to a degree by Commercial Motor readers).
The remainder of the booklet looks at the story of timber haulier Croasdale's 1972 Volvo F88 6x2, still working after three million miles. Secrets such as running at night, which makes it harder to spot 21ft overhangs,are revealed -and illustrated by numerous colour pictures. The booklet may be small, but it's an entertain. ing read. It's in a good cause, too: all proceeds go to CORDA, the sole distributor.
