• Dundee Corporation's transport committee has decided against providing free bus services, but is to seek amendment of regulations in order to allow assistance to be provided for unprofitable routes.
The issue was raised when it was announced that there was an estimated deficit of £277,000 for the current year. The committee agreed to apply to the Traffic Commissioners for permission to increase the 3p and 5p adult fares and also to introduce a two-tier fare system.
ClIr J. Doig, convener, said that in recent years the numbers of passengers being carried had been going down by about half a million annually, and his Labour group was anxious to change this trend. It proposed that the town clerk should seek an amendment to that part of the Consolidated Order affecting the department so as to allow subsidies to be given where necessary.
