• Magirus Deutz (GB) Ltd has replaced its 230D 26 AK 6x6 on /off site dump truck with a new model plated to operate at 26 tons gross on site and 24 tons gross off site to C and U Regulations; fitted with a standard scow-end body, maximum payload is 14.8 tons and 12.8 tons respectively.
The 17ft 21n. outer wheelbase truck features different engine, chassis and axles to the previous model and also has a redesigned all-steel cab which is mounted on a three-point suspension system. The cab is sound-proofed and has wind-up windows.
The chassis had been strengthened by fitting larger section members while the prefabricated axles of the previous model have been superseded by forged-steel ones. A third differential is now incorporated in the twin-drive bogie construction.
The 413 series V8 air-cooled engine fitted to the dump truck is that fitted to many of the Magirus goods models. Compared to the previous unit it has the same bore but a shorter stroke and produces 232 net bhp at 2650 rpm DIN — a 2 bhp increase. Peak torque is 500 lb ft net — 93 lb ft less than the previous unit — at between 1300 and 1600 rpm. The drive line consists of a 15in. diameter single dry-plate clutch, a ZF six-speed constant-mesh gearbox and a 2F two-speed transfer bOx. For general site work the transfer box low ratio is used, the high ratio being selected when running off-site.
A driver-selected electro /pneumatic switch locks the transfer box differential and the bogie third differential. A further switch is used to engage the across-axle locks of the bogie.
Maximum quoted speeds are 43 mph on road and 28 mph on site. The laden vehicle can restart on a 1 in 1.73 gradient.
The twin-spring bogie has maximum articulation of 17in. and is plated for operation within C and U Regulations to 18.5 tons, though it is designed to be plated to 20 tons. The front axle is plated to 6.5 tons and is fitted with double-acting telescopic shock absorbers. The split-circuit brake system incorporates hydraulic actuation of the front brakes and duo-servo air-operated units at the bogie wheels. The spring-operated parking brake is linked to the rear wheels only. An air-operated exhaust brake is standard. Steering is ZF integral power recirculating ball and a swept turning circle of 62ft is claimed.
The headquarters of Magirus Deutz (GB) Ltd is at Road Five, Industrial Estate, Winsford, Cheshire.
