• A nationwide chain of up to 130 road transport computer centres is being set up through the country's Information Technology Centres (ITECs).
The first such centre, established at Rugby on November 10, is already offering a computerised tachograph checking service, and there are plans to offer computer training for road transport personnel before the end of next January.
Plans have now been laid for five similar centres to be established at ITECs in Norwich, Rhyl, Telford, Loughborough and Burton during December. A further 10 ITECs will be introduced to the scheme each month thereafter.
The scheme has been developed by ITEC in conjunction with Loughborough-based software house Road Transport Computer Services.
RTCS has undertaken to supply all ITECs in the scheme with software for tachograph checking and training. In return the ITECs will offer sales, service and support for RTCS products.
RTCS director Roy Nelson says that up to 50 ITECs are expected to offer tachograph analysis, and up to 130 will offer computer training.
Both the RHA and the Road Transport Industry Training Board have been invited to participate in the scheme, and both organisations have undertaken to send representatives to a meeting of the scheme's working party later this month.
Nelson says the ITECs offering tachograph analysis will each aim for a client base of around 500 drivers.
