SMITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, the maker of electric vans and trucks, is increasing manufacturing capacity at its Tyne and Wear factory from 250 to 1,500 vehicles per year.
The Washingtonbased firm makes its vans and trucks for short and mediumdistance work such as the home-shopping, postal, parcels and utility sectors.
The Smith Edison van has a top speed of 50mph with one battery charge providing a range of up to 150 miles.
