career as a bobby on the beat with Lancashire Police. He was one of the
pioneers of teaching and enforcing tachograph laws for the police and had served for 25 years when TNT headhunted h4n to set up its own tachograph department.
Adamson was involved in the first crown court case for tachograph fraud, against a company at Preston Crown Court in 1986. The trial lasted 56 days and resulted in imprisonment for some of the defendants.
As a traffic officer, Adamson saw many colleagues move on from the police to jobs in transport, but was adamant he did not want a driving job. "I've seen too many fatal accidents to want to do that,' he says.
But nor did the tacho job at TNT last forever and Adamson moved on to supervise the company's insurance cover, which it now largely takes on itself. The only insurance TNT puts to an outside company is so-called "catastrophe" cover, for claims of more than £750,000.
Adamson has no regrets about moving from the poke to the private sector, even though he was clearly an outstanding policeman, being awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to road safety.
