A SIGNIFICANT breakthrough in light diesel engine technology comes with the announcement of a new lveco 2.45-litre unit derived from the existing 30FIM pre-combustion engine of the same displacement in DucatĀ° and Daily models.
The new type 8140.21 engine, for which applications have still to be announced officially, is probably the smallest diesel yet using the direct injection principle. The four-cylinder engine with a compression ratio of 18:1 is fitted with a KKK K-26 waste-gate turbocharger and develops 68kW at 3,800rev/min, which is 15kW less than the original SOFIM engine. Maximum torque of 216Nm is produced at 2,200rev/min, while fuel consumption is claimed to be 15-18 per cent lower. Engine life, before first major overhaul, is good for 250,000km.
