THE ARTICLE headed "Winter draws on" on page 22 of the October 8 issue of Commercial Motor contains a misleading statement, in my opinion.
The fuel additive produced by Comma Oil and Chemical is stated to stop fuel waxing.
Many additives are produced which are known as fuel flow improvers. To my knowledge, no additive commercially available stops the fuel waxing, but only acts to prevent the wax crystals joining together to block filters and fuel lines.
There can be no certainty that wax crystals will not form when fuel temperature falls well below zero, and therefore operators should take all reasonable precautions to minimize very low fuel temperatures.
The members of the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers have thoroughly investigated this waxing problem since the severe winter of 1981-1982, and can offer sound advice to their customers. The major oil companies are of course fully aware of the problems, and have the technical facilities to evaluate the claims of all additives produced.
My letter is intended to prevent complacency on the part of the operator, not to quarrel with the claims of an additive designed to help him.
