THE CENTRAL Electricity Generating Board is to reduce its lorry deliveries to its Sizewell B site in Suffolk, after strong environmental pressure from local authorities and local MP and new Conservative Party chairman John Gummer.
The reduction will mean 25,000 fewer lorry loads of sand and gravel travelling through Suffolk. Instead, the materials will be brought in by sea, if it gets Government approval.
The materials will be pumped from barges to the Sizewell site through a pipeline beneath the seabed.
Lorries will still be needed to carry about 100,000 tonnes of sand and gravel, along with other building and plant materials.
The CEGB said that this change would not increase transport costs by a great margin.
