• Road transport costs would rise by 2.36% and employment in the industry drop by 3.6% if the EC goes ahead with its plan for a $10 per barrel oil tax in an attempt to reduce CO2 emissions says a study publised by the EC Commission last week. According to the study rail would be hit even harder; costs would rise by nearly 5% and employment drop by 2.5%.
Wage rise • Pay increases rose to an average 4.5% in the three months to September, up on the 4.3% recorded in the quarter to August, according to a survey by the Labour Research Department.
Russian measures • EC Transport Commissioner Karel van Miert has met Russia's Transport Minister Dmitri Esimov in Brussels and agreed on measures including the secondment of Western experts in business management and technical matters, the training of Russian specialists and new regulatory legislation based on the EC system.
Float success • Vehicle maker Trinity Holdings, whose subsidiaries include Dennis Specialist Vehicles, reports that demand for its shares are so high that allocations are being restricted in its £30 million flotation. Subsidiaries also include refuse vehicle maker Dennis Eagle and Carmichael Fire.
Carmen honours • Tibbett and Britten director Tony Stanton has been admitted to the livery of the Worshipful Coinpany of Carmen in London together with Stephen Slater, finance director of Beck and Pollitzer.
Edbro cuts • Tipping equipment manufacturer, Edbro, is asking 20 of its staff to take voluntary redundancy at its site in Bolton, Lancashire.
