• Vehicles with worn, ill-matched or defective tyres present a fearful risk to drivers and other road users. "Yet," said Mr John Peyton, "there are still drivers prepared to hazard life and limb for what is a patently false economy—tyre neglect."
The Minister, speaking on Wednesday, launched the biggest tyre safety campaign ever mounted in the UK.
Tyre Safety Week, which runs to May 1, is sponsored ' by the British Rubber Manufacturers' Association, representing all UK tyre makers. The director of the Association, Mr Reginald Byford, said: "The 'Week' will be bringing home in a forceful way the immense importance of running on sound tyres. The free check which the traders are offering could save a driver an accident, a heavy fine, endorsement, or even loss of licence."
