Dutch transport companies carry around 540m tonnes of freight by road each year and the sector represents a third of all those employed in transport of any kind including aviation, shipping and public transport. Around 100,000 trucks operate within the Netherlands supplying the domestic economy.
Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) is an employers' association founded in 1992 to which 7,300 hauliers and Logistics providers are affiliated. Drivers' pay is negotiated in a central deal every year or two years with drivers' representatives from trade unions FNV and CNV.
Last year TLN negotiated a 400m guilder (L112m) tax break for hauliers hit by fuel rises. It is meeting government in September to discuss further ways to help the industry after the government paid for three reports looking at the industry's structure and costings. A 6m guilder (71.7m) advertising campaign has boosted the image of the Dutch haulage industry and more is planned. In partnership with transport related companies, such as BP, it works to raise road safety awareness in schools.
