LORD THOMAS, who died recently at the age of 82, was the youngest editor ever to be appointed by Temple Press, which founded Commercial Motor. As Miles Thomas he became editor of The Light Car, now defunct, at the age of 24. This was quite an achievement in an organisation by no means dedicated to the modern cult of youth.
What brought him to fame as a journalist was his remarkable memory. When his report of a Paris Motor Show was lost in transmission — a disaster with which he was not acquainted until he returned to the office —
he immediately dictated it from memory and averted catastrophe.
To the intense chagrin of his employers he left The Light Car to join Morris Motors, which was the start of a meteoric and sometimes tempestuous career in industry.
