DEMAND for automatic tachographs has exceeded the industry's expectations, according to Lucas Kienzle director and general manager Fred Kay.
He told CM last week that the company, working on advice from the industry, had matched British orders to the 80 per cent German production bias against automatic tachographs.
But operators have seen many advantages in the automatic device, which selects the driving mode when a vehicle moves off, and reverts to "other work" when it stops. The device needs only to be worked manually when the driver takes a break.
Demand has outstripped supply, and Lucas Kienzie has arrears of several thousand automatic tachographs. Mr Kay is confident that the backlog will be cleared within six to eight weeks. An additional advantage of the automatic units is that they can be used in conjunction with the newly imported IP1613 analysis computer(see News Extra p24), which prints out management information from tachograph charts.
