THE FTA has published the London Rai/freight Guide tE5 to members), an assessment of facilities provided by rail freight terminals in London and their associated services.
It provides information on the types of service — Trainload, Speedlink and Freightliner -terminal facilities, trunk and trip services, and wagon and container specifications.
"While in absolute terms, rail's share of the market is small, five per cent in London and nine per cent nationally, its share of the traffic moving over 130 miles is significantly higher, 30 per cent," it says.
"Rail freight carryings in and out of London are 7.5m tonnes compared with road carryings in excess of 150m tonnes. The reason for this enormous disparity is quite simply the absence of heavy industry in London."
