• The RAC is launching what it calls an Elite Register of garages open only to those that agree to go "on trial" for a minimum of six months to prove themselves to inspectors.
RAC chief engineer John Wood says the RAC is going to try to do for Britain's garages what people like Michelin and Egon Ronay have been doing for restaurants.
The RAC's currently "approved garages" scheme has been scrapped and its 600 members invited to apply to join the new register.
"Service and repair garages throughout Britain can apply," it says, but conditions are tough; no more than 50 garages are expected to be appointed by the end of the year. They will be entitled to use the Elite Register symbol on their premises and stationery.
Membership is not granted for life.
