• "Ultimately," says Bob Juggins, business manager of Pipercross, which makes foam filters, "the paper element is dead."
Its filters are used by a number of operators, including British Steel, TNT and Tarmac Roadstone, says the company, and are being evaluated in the Weetabix fleet and the Oxford City Bus's coach garage.
They are claimed to last twice as long as paper filters while costing only 25% more and to have a special coating which cuts down clogging.
