When New Labour was first elected, everybody knew it had a major job ox its hands with regard to transport. That's why (among other reasons) we gave Mr Blair and his chums a second chance in 1997. After all, sorting out the nation's transport needs IS a big job.
And what have we got to show for it? Whenever anyone asks about transport, the Government's response has been repetitive navel gazing. What we wanted was tactics—what we got was strategy.
Finally, in July z000 Labour's much-trumpeted io-Year Plan was unveiled. Included within it was a commitment to increase rail-freight by 8o% by 2010. Some joke.
Plenty of CM readers may well welcome the news that SRA grants have been slashed—no more subsidised competition from rail. But if the Government isn't committed to rail-freight, what chance has road haulage got? You work it out.
And on the subject of the government, we can't help but be angered by it's high-handed
