• Taxing employees who use company vans for private mileage has been slammed as "bureaucratic and costly" by Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Alan Beith.
He complains that by rejecting a Liberal Democrat amendment on the issue in the Finance Bill, debated earlier this month, the Government is "wasting precious time for many businesses, as well as introducing a heavy tax charge that was never previously made".
Beith says: "It really is time the Inland Revenue and other Government bureaucracies thought more carefully about the effects of their action on the very people who are creating jobs for people, and who are essential for economic recovery."
