LAST week, the President of the Board of Trade announced that henceforward the base year of index numbers of the volume of United Kingdom imports and exports would be 1947, instead of 1938. The pre-war level of exports was overtaken in 1947, and there was an overall increase of 40 per cent, in exports until 1949, In regard to the export of vehicles, including locomotives, ships and aircraft, the increase in exports amounts to 111 per cent, for the first quarter of 1950, taking the volume of exports in 1947 as 100 per cent.
