A Useful Alloy.
The Electric and Ordnance Accessories Co., Ltd., is responsible for the introduction of " Duralumin," that new alloy of aluminium which is finding such favour with manufacturers on account of its combined lightness, strength and homogeneity. The new No. 1 naval airship which is just emerging from the constructional stage at the Barrow yards of Vickers, Sons and Maxim, Ltd., is reported to have a large part of its fabric made of this interesting metal. It already has many applications in connection with the construction of commercial-motor vehicles.
Simplex Extincteurs.
Our attention has been drawn to a new type of portable fire extinguisher which has just been introduced by Simplex Conduits Ltd., whose works are at Garrison Lane, Birmingham. This company will, perhaps, be best known to our readers as the makers of a special tubular system, which is used extensively for the insulation of electric installations. We illustrate herewith one of the new Simplex fire-extinguishers ; the type is to be known as "the Dreadnought." Every effort has been made to ensure that this design is of as simple a nature as possible ; its principal fea ture is that it has attached to it a small cylinder containing compressed C.0.1 gas. It is only necessary to put this into communication with the extinguisher itself to make the cylinder operative. The fluid which is used is a non-conductor, and it is therefore of special utility in the extinguishing of electrical fires. It is also claimed that it is particularly efficient in the case of fires arising from the accidental ignition of petrol and other inflammable liquids.
