Dutch operator to move into Birmingham

• One of Holland's largest operators — Gelders Transport — iS moving into the United Kingdom with a base at Birmingham and jobs for 150 men. Before doing so the company contacted the Transport and General Workers' Union and last weekend Mr Alan Law, the commercial trade group secretary, and Mr Brian Mathers, the area secretary of TGWU, went to Arnhem to conclude a wage agreement. The union leaders said that the agreement was identical to the one they had with Containerbase (Birmingham) Ltd, where the men arc paid £1 an hour for a 371-hour week. They are reported with overtime to be able to earn up to £90 per week.
Gelders have 40 depots in Europe and Mr Law said that this decision to move into Birmingham was significant.
