• Wiltshire police have issued a free telephone number for operators likely to be affected by 20 abnormally wide loads travelling between Avonmouth and Didcot over the next 11 months.
National Power says it can only give the police 48 hours' notice of the movements of the huge gas turbines it is installing at Didcot power station, but is sponsoring the telephone ser vice to try and cut congestion.
Drivers who could be affected by the loads—which weigh up to 450 tonnes and move at 4mph—should call 0800 241504 for the latest report.
The loads will generally move by night along the M5 from Avonmouth docks to the M4 at Almondsbury. There they will head east to J13 and north along the A34 to Didcot.
