is a desperate need for new rest areas but he believes a better way
John Hunt forward might be for the
government to carry out the compulsory purchase of land surrounding existing motorway services in order to extend parking facilities "At the moment. you've got lay-bys full of foreign lorries," he points out. "Some of them even pull onto the hard shoulder on the motorway and fall asleep.
"There's an area around Junctions 20 and 21 of the M1 where, at the back of the hard shoulder, there s a little lay-by," Hunt adds. "The Highways Agency often finds foreign lorries parked up in there. The M25, though. is the worst of the lot.
"I've been on the M25 and had to pull off, drive into a town and find somewhere to park just to get my 45 minutes' rest.'
The proposed rest areas cannot come soon enough for Hunt. But he stresses that they must be free and they must be restricted to lorry drivers.
