• Distribution and rental giant Ryder is buying 1,000 new trucks worth £30m as bosses predict an end to the recession for the transport industry Business development director John Stocker says: "We believe things are looking up, and we are confident of achieving targets set out in our business plan for 1994."
About 400 of the new vehicles will be replacement units. Total fleet numbers will reach 7,500 by the end of next year. The move follows a recent £7m investment in 300 vehicles for Ryders rental fleet.
E Job prospects in the haulage business are brighter than the rest of industry, according to a survey by employment agency Manpower. Nearly a quarter of firms are hoping to take on staff before Christmas compared with 13% who want to shed jobs.
