Roy Hammonds says he was "totally dumbfounded" by his sacking on 18 May. "I'm living with a lot of uncertainty," he says. "I'm gutted and very disappointed by Iceland's stance. I had been there 11 years and not had a warning."
Hammonds, a driver based at Iceland's Deeside depot, was sacked for making regular 21mile detours to avoid Cumbrian village Kirkby Stephen, on the grounds, he says, of safety. The village has a 14% hilland residents have staged protests about the dangers of lorries to school children. According to Hammonds, all routeing decisions were taken by drivers.
He was sacked after his vehicle's satellite tracking system showed he made the same M6 detour 22 times, claiming the extra 20 minutes a day which amounted to O.
He says he has decided to take his case to industrial tribunal because "I feel that strongly about it. It's been so traumatic. I've had my ups and downs— you just get to the point where you wish it was all over."
