"We've been involved over the past four years. It has cast us approximately £300,000 and we've put through 400 drivers. A rollover costs the company 1350,000—not including injury---£200k for the trailer, £100k for the truck plus all the other stuff including the load."
He says that if one turnover has been avoided then it has been worth it, "Before the training we had on average a turnover every 18 months to two years. Since we started the training we have had only one and we don't know whether any training could have prevented this one happening."
Badkin says his drivers are eager to get on the course because it is an enjoyable day that has a serious message. "We are looking at getting 100 drivers a year on the course repeating the training every four/five years. We don't have a very high turnover of drivers, partly because investing In training improves drivers' morale and confidence in the company."
The training is expensive and Badkin relies heavily on the sponsors, including ERF, which has provided two trucks and the training sponsors, BP and Goodyear.
