LEDS COUNCIL will not itroduce congestion charging ntil the government puts more Jblic money into the area's public ansport and road infrastructure. A council spokesperson has !kited claims in the Yorkshire 951 that councillors are considing road charging because of a Inding shortfall. The Yorkshire Posi reports that it has obtained details from agendas and meetings of the chief executives of the 11 councils in and around Leeds using freedom of information rules.

One agenda, the paper claims, warns of "a need to embrace the government's transport innovation fund set up to support schemes such as road pricing".The council submitted a £1.5m bid for this funding in July.

IN Irish Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has ruled out a congestion charge for Dublin for the time being, saying that a charge will be considered only after transport improvements have been made.
