HE MAYOR OF a Hampshire town wants a Roadways Container Logistics driver to be charged with careless driving after his truck was wedged for six hours under a railway bridge on a designated LGV route.
Mark Cooper says the cost to Ramsey was significant because one of only two routes into town was blocked by the artic.
However, he admits there is confusion among drivers because the A3057, where the vehicle got stuck, is a council-preferred lorry route offered as an alternative to the A34 through Newbury before a bypass was built.
The RCL driver drove through height restriction warning signs before his vehicle dragged a protective beam into a neighbouring garden. Cooper says this is the 45th bridge bashing incident in 12 years.
An RCL spokesman says: As far as I am aware we haven't hit this bridge before. When it happens it causes a lot of stink. We have established there was no fault with our equipment: the height meter was set at 14.6m."
