ABODY similar to that of the Morris-Commercial 30-cwt. forward-control van has now been adopted for a new 1-tonner known as the LD.1 and based on the chassis components of the PV model, which it supersedes.
Use has been made of a larger power unit, which is similar to that fined in the LC.5 30-cwt. truck. This is a 2.2litre four-cylindered overhead-valve engine developing 46 b.h.p. it 3.250 r.p.m: and 97 lb.-ft. torque.
RIO The three-bearing counterbalanced crankshaft runs in shell bearings, which are also used for the big-end journals. The pistons are of the aluminium-alloy split-skirt type and have three compression rings and one scraper ring.
The four-speed gearbox has ratios of 5A37, 2.884, 1.637 and 1 to 1. The spiral-bevel rear axle has a ratio of 5.125 to I.
The van has a wheelbase of 8 ft. 4/ in., an overall length of 14 ft. 3 in. and is 6 ft. 2 in. wide. The ground clearance is 8/ in. and the turning circle approximately 30 ft. The yehic!e weighs 31f cwt. unladen and the maximum permissible gross load is 2 tons 12 cwt.
Features of the bodywork include flush-fitting sliding front doors and boxed-in front wings. The van is of all-metal-panel construction with a robust roof structure and reinforced rear doors.
The interior length and width are 9 ft. 5/ in. and 5 ft. 101 in. respectively, and the interior height is 4 ft. 9 in. Other body details include a special retainer at the rear for securing the doors in an open position at an angle of 900 and ventilation intakes above the windscreen. The wheel-arches are of the flat-top type to facilitate stacking and to increase the useful payload space.
