NEARLY 300,000 new commercial vehicles went on the roads of this country in 1960. This is a record, and is mainly attributable to the high level of sales of goods vehicles. Apart from a slight decline from 1955-57, a period coveting the Suez crisis, registrations of goods vehicles have soared since 1952, when thetotal was 82,000. They reached 153.000 in 1955; 171,000 in 1958: 192,000 in 1959; and 226,000 last year. Hackney registrations, although in previous years settled at a level of about 5,000, have also risen to a record 6.372 in 1960.
However, the number of new corn
merciat vehicles registered during December, 1960, at 19,699, was 4,010 less than in the previous month and 21,520 less than the highest monthly total of 31,219, which was attained in March. The lowest mtinthly total for the year came in August, when the figure was 18,800.
The aggregate figure for all vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, registered during December was 65,675, bringing the total for the year to 1,369,386. This means that there were approximately 9{ million vehicles on the roads of Great Britain at the end Of last year.
