LEADING WEST COUNTRY haulier Gregory Distribution has won a three-and-a-half-year contract with South-West Water.
The multi-million-pound contract is for the transport of "biosolids" from over 600 sewage treatment works across Devon and Cornwall to a number of reprocessing facilities. The work had previously been carried out in house. Andy Walker, MD at the Devon-based operator, says: "When we were first invited to tender our first reaction was that this was a benchmarking exercise on [South West Water's] part.
"But we established that it was very serious about it and we decided that we could have a go based on the skills we had gained in the milk industry that could be transferred across." Gregory, which last year posted a turnover of £63m, will invest £1.5m in new trucks and trailers for the contract, which starts on 1 April.
North Tawton-based Gregory has been diversifying lately from its traditional transport and storage operations.
Its recent purchase of local rival Greendale Transport is its first venture into the waste and recycling sector.
