IRAN HAS A new truck manufacturer: the Aras Khodro Diesel Company, based in the Aras Free Trade Zone. This will mitigate the effects of foreign currency outflows as the Islamic Republic seeks to upgrade its transport fleet.
The new firm is expected to create over 48,000 direct and indirect jobs, while saving the Iranian government the $300m a year it currently spends on importing trucks and parts Five models are planned,with a capacity of 30,000 units a year.
Mercedes-Benz has remained close to Iran Khodro Diesel; it has produced trucks and engines in the country throughout the revolutionary era. Iveco has done. well in Iran, as has Volvo through its relationship with another Iranian automaker, Saipa Diesel.
