Mr. Cooke defined unit load handling as: "The acquired science and skill in design and application of containers to enable movement in unit loads at the maximum economy". Bulk material handling containers should be of such a size that when fully loaded they can be easily handled by conventional types of lift truck. Such containers were used for inter-plant shipment by truck, rail, sea or air and for internal factory use involving special process techniques. It was significant that unit load principles and containerization were expanding fast in the Far East, despite the relatively low cost labour available. The most popular base dimension of unit load bins was 42in. x 48in. with cubic capacities varying from 40 cu.ft. to 120 cu.ft. These dimensions had proved acceptable from the standpoint of vehicle design, loading platform sizes, rail road standards, etc., and pertinent to production volume or programme. Unit load tanks and liquid bins in capacities from 200 to 600 gallons could be fabricated in a variety of materials and these were in much greater use in the US than in comparable industries in this country. The use of standardized unit load systems made possible labour savings of the order of 10 to 20 per cent.
